LITTER - Evan Brien

  • Burnt Toast Studio Bay 5, 215 36th Ave NE Calgary AB (map)

A long walk down back alleys on a sunny day, a found treasure most would consider trash, and something silly that makes me crack a smile nevertheless. These are the things that ground me and excite me about day to day life, and what I attempt to capture in the artwork I make: presenting themselves as bizzaro wayfinding signage for the back alley of the mind. Humor, a glimpse into the history of space over time, and an introspective look into the process of life, are all aspects that characterize my work through the use of layering found material, uncomplicated imagery, and hand painted lettering onto and throughout each other, tied together with a thin string of narrative. Most often the artwork has a hand in creating itself as I take cues in theme and subject from the found materials themselves; building off of a combination of their colour, texture, original purpose, and the area in which they were found Recurring themes and imagery appear throughout each piece of artwork that give a sense of a continuation of the story. I am interested in ideas surrounding my experiences and those that can be characterized of the working class: monotony, the ebb and flow between comfort and struggle, definitions of success and individual purpose, and the effect that the passing of time has on all these concepts and the way they can be parallelled by the physical nature of found materials and the untold/disregarded history tied to them. - Evan Brien
