  • Founder and Vice-President

Alden is a master printmaker and the ongoing anchor of the soul of Burnt Toast Studio. He is an ACAD graduate and has printed works for hundreds of artists, non-profits, friends and bands over the years.

  • President

Karolina Gajewska is a multimedia artist whose practice spans printmaking and sculpture, with a focus on mood, personality, and the aesthetics of turmoil. For the past 17 years, she has worked primarily out of Burnt Toast Studio in Calgary, where she has been an active member of the collective.

Her work has been featured in numerous poster shows and in an exhibition with CSpace Pilot Project, highlighting her ability to translate emotion and atmosphere into striking visual form. Karolina’s approach blends technical precision with expressive storytelling, often exploring the tension between inner states and external realities.

Alongside her studio practice, Karolina brings over a decade of experience in the film and arts sectors, specializing in team leadership, production, and presentation. This dual path—working at the intersection of visual art and film—fuels her passion for storytelling as a cultural catalyst, inspiring both personal growth and community connection.

What does the Board of Directors do?

Thank you for your interest in joining the Burnt Toast Studio leadership team. Burnt Toast Studio is a non-profit artist collective that provides affordable studio spaces, shared equipment, and opportunities for artists to showcase their work and connect with the community.

Our leadership team is structured to ensure both strategic direction and hands-on support. Members commit to a two-year term, contributing a minimum of 5 hours a month and their skills while also growing through committee participation. Fresh energy and perspectives are essential, while continuity in some positions helps sustain our collective vision.

Leadership Roles

  • President – Guides the team in executing strategic plans, chairs meetings, oversees committees, and ensures alignment with long-term goals.

  • Vice President – Supports the President, steps in when needed, strengthens community connections, and helps maintain financial stability.

  • Past President – Provides continuity, mentorship, and guidance to new leadership.

  • Secretary – Maintains records, minutes, and communications, ensuring transparency and accountability.

  • Treasurer – Manages finances, budgets, and compliance; oversees revenue and expenses; liaises with auditors/bookkeepers.

Committees
Each team member contributes to at least one committee, based on interest and expertise:

  • Governance – Strategic planning, memberships, financial oversight, compliance, partnerships.

  • Infrastructure – Studio maintenance, safety, renovations, IT, and operational processes.

  • Marketing – Social media, events promotion, newsletters, website, and brand assets.

  • Events – Gallery bookings, fundraising, pop-ups, community events, classes, and member shows.

The leadership cycle renews annually at our AGM , where new members are officially welcomed. Throughout the year, all voices are valued, and decisions are made collectively to advance our shared vision.
