Mechaela Marr

silkscreen | block printing | textiles | soft sculpture

Mechaela Marr is a visual artist, curator, and music promoter living/working in Mohkinstsis (Calgary), the traditional territories of Indigenous peoples in the Treaty 7 region, and Métis Nation of Alberta, region 3. I primarily work in printmaking, textiles, and soft sculpture, but am always interested in learning new crafts. My practice often centres around historical research, the process of information gathering and keeping, and the historiography/tradition of fine art and museum studies. Currently I’m interested in historical iconography and images of the fantastical, grotesque, and ‘ugly,’ focusing on monstrous births and how they impacted perceptions of disability/femininity throughout Early Modern Europe. I also love comics and cartoons, community organizing, making zines, and dreaming about having my own clothing line.
